There is one common denominator that we all rely on regardless of which gadget we use – the battery. A flat battery renders our smart device useless muting the Android vs. Apple vs. BlackBerry vs. Windows debate as we scramble looking for portable power packs and cables.

I have previously written about the cell phone wars and how the winner will be determined by the ease of usability and the battery life. Since then I have been keeping my eye on various companies who claim to have evolved the battery technology. There is one company that keeps popping up whenever I research this topic: Store Dot.

You might be one of the 3.5 million people who saw StoreDot recharge a Samsung device from flat battery to full in 30 seconds:

Since then the company has developed the FlashBattery, a “highly dense energy sponge that soaks up enough power in just 1 minute, storing it to last nearly an entire day” according to the website. This battery charges 100 times faster than traditional Li-Ion battery and has a charge/ discharge cycle of 2500 times compared to the only 500 times of our current batteries. In other words, the battery lasts longer.

The company is in talks with the large mobile manicures who are looking to use FlashBattery in their devices which means that consumers wont be able to buy these batteries off the shelf but will come as part of the new mobile phone package. Customers would happily pay more for their devices if it meant that their entire battery could be charges in 30 seconds. This is a game-changer.

But the company isn’t stopping there.

Power to the Electric Car

StoreDot’s latest innovation is adapting their faster battery charging technology into an area that will make or break an entire industry: the electric car.

Electric cars have been around for some time now, but their biggest barrier to mass adoption is the battery. Consumers are not afraid of the cars not working, they have a syndrome called “Range Anxiety” which is the fear of running out of power before reaching the destination or a suitable place to recharge. Recharging an electric vehicle using normal power takes several hours and owners typically plug in their cars to charge overnight. This certainly doesn’t help if you are on the road and need to charge-up butt are no where near home nor  can you spend hours waiting for your car to charge.

This is where Store Dots technology comes in. Using the EV FlashBattery technology they are able to charge an electric car battery in just 5 minutes:

When fully charged, the EV FlashBattery stores enough energy for a 480 km range on a 5 minute charge. This translates to 100km of travel on a 1-minute charge compared to standard batteries which will give only 12km per 1 minute charge. Should this technology be adopted and licenced by the Electric Vehicle Manufacturers, this could be the key the unlocks the barrier to our next car being an electric vehicle.

If I was a betting man on companies that are changing the world, this is definitely one that I would keep my eye on.
