How accurate is the Pixel 4 Recorder App Transcription with accents? Not what I expected

I have a love/ hate relationship with voice assistants. I mean, I love to use it but it hates my accent so when I try to use it, weird and wonderful things normally pop up. When the Google Pixel 4 was announced, I was really excited about the Live Captions and the Pixel 4 Live Transcription that the native Recorder App could do. But with my accent….I wasn’t sure if it would work or not.

I decided to run a global test on various accents to see how accurate it is so I got a bunch of people with various accents to help me test this feature.

The Live Transcription Accent Test

I’m part of #TeamTrees, a Mr. Beast initiative, that a lot of us content creators got involved in, in order to raise 20 million dollars to plant 20 million trees. You can read more about TeamTrees here.

So what does that have to do with the Pixel 4? Since I’ve been involved in TeamTrees, a common question that has been asked is “How did TeamTree start?” So I figured let’s take that question and let’s get it answered by a team of awesome YouTube creator friends who have really awesome accents.

The Live Transcription Method

Each content creator was given the same set of instruction: Do a quick intro and then read the following lines:

“It all started with a challenge idea. Back in May 2019, MrBeast, aka Jimmy Donaldson, asked his audience what he should do to mark the occasion of his channel reaching 20 million subscribers. The audience rallied behind the idea that he should plant 20 million trees. 1 Tree for every subscriber. What started off as a comment from a fan, quickly gained momentum and MrBeast was on board.”

I then played their video back while having the Google Pixel 4 Recorder app open and watched the magic unfold.

So in summary:

I am thoroughly impressed with the way the Pixel 4 handled this challenge. It seemed like names were tricky, even from those who had “American Accents”.  Sometimes the infliction in the dialect threw it off too but overall this worked much much better than I expected.

what is great about this transcription is the ability to share it in both text and audio files – together or separately. You can also run a search across all these transcriptions. If you are in College or at important business meetings or in the media/ journalist – this has now become the must-have tool.
