YouTubers are at it again. This time not for more drama but for a really great cause that everyone is rallying behind – welcome to #TeamTrees
This is a movement not a video.
When it comes to YouTube in the mainstream media, it is usually some drama where Creator A said something about Creator B or yet another controversy where an “influencer” is unmasked for being a fake. Media, as a generalization, tends to ignore the goodness that comes out of YouTubers and the charity work that creators do.
Today is a prime example of how the YouTube community rallies behind an amazing cause – saving the planet with #TeamTrees.
So what is #TeamTrees?
It all started with a challenge idea. Back in May 2019, MrBeast (he has a real name too: Jimmy Donaldson) asked his audience what he should do to mark the occasion of his channel reaching 20 million subscribers? The audience rallied behind the idea that he should plant 20 million trees. 1 Tree for every subscriber. What started off as a comment from a fan, quickly gained momentum and MrBeast seemed to be on board.
Since 20 million trees would be impossible for one person to plant, he partnered with Mark Rober to conceptualize a plan that would work. The idea: involved the YouTube community.
Over several months, under the cover of DMs, they secretly recruited a growing community of YouTube Creators who would help with the mission. Everyone was welcomed, regardless of subscriber count and #TeamTrees was born (sprouted?)
The premise was simple and solid: each creator has a community of people they can reach out to. Therefore, the creator asks his community to donate $1. For every $1 that is donated a tree will be planted.
Simple maths: to get to 20 million trees, the aim of the #TeamTrees campaign is to raise collectively $20 million.
Who gets the money raised by #TeamTrees?
The donations will go to the Arbor Day Foundation who will manage and coordinate the actual tree planting. This organization has been doing just this for the past 47 years. The Arbor Day Foundation always emphasizes planting native species where local conditions and forest plans allow. They will manage and coordinate all of that.
Their motto is to plant the right trees, in the right place, for the right reasons. Tree planting on this scale is definitely much more complicated than just digging a hole in the ground and dropping in a sapling. They are the pros.
Where are the trees going to be planted?
20 million is a lot of trees. Therefore they will plant the trees in a variety of forests on public and private lands in areas of great need. Many of these forests will be state and national forests managed by government agencies.
These trees will be planted throughout the year starting in January of 2020 and completed no later than December 2022.
How can you get involved?
It’s simple and every single dollar helps. Head over to https://teamtrees.org/ and make your donation.
The time is now
The old African proverb: When is the best time to plant a tree? 20 years ago. When is second best time to plant a tree? RIGHT NOW.
Be part of the movement not only for our sake but for the sake of future generations too.
This will be a moment spoken about in history when a bunch of YouTubers, changed the course of the planet and gave us a new lease on life and the air quality we breathe.
