Yes – the tipping point has been reached and now cell phone manufacturers are unveiling their folding phones regardless if we want them to or not.
Only a few short days after Samsung revealed their Samsung Fold, at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, Huawei took to the stage and they revealed the Huawei Mate X. After taking a little swipe at Samsung by showing that the “other” phone has a little gap when it is folded and is thicker with a notch, Huawei showcased their folding phone.

How does it work/ feel?
Once again it seems like the media were allowed to see the phone, snap pics and videos of it, but not allowed to handle the phone. This once again begs the question of how ready the device actually is right now?
So in summary:
While the phones clearly do have their differences, they do have two things in common:
- Price – these phones are certainly not for the masses. Early adopters will have to spend some serious cash on a phone that folds just to say they have it first. For the same price, you can pick up a serious laptop AND a phone and still have change…
- The Rush – As per my questions on the Samsung Fold, I fear that there is a rush to the Folding Phone market to announce and show products, but then take some time to finalize the last 20% before being market-ready.
It is common to show off prototypes at developer conferences so that developers can begin shifting their code and thinking to incorporate the new upcoming designs and features. But showing incomplete products at events like Unpacked and MWC? hmmmm….that’s a new trend which I hope doesn’t become the new norm…
