PriceCheck sees BlackBerry as pivotal for Africa
After my last post about the PriceCheck and WayTag in the final running for the BlackBerry Achievement Awards, I was curious to get some “behind the scene” info and see where PriceCheck is now and where they are going. I want to know what makes PriceCheck such a successful app ?
I chatted to Charl Mocke, Product Owner: Mobile PriceCheck.
Q. How has PriceCheck been accepted and downloaded ?
A. The PriceCheck app has been downloaded 191,387 times across all major platforms. This is made up of 78,630 downloaded on iOS, Android, Nokia, Windows Phone and 112,757 times on BlackBerry platform since launch on that platform last year.
Q. The BlackBerry platform has the highest number of downloads how does BlackBerry fits into PriceCheck’s future plans?
A. Charl replies “The largest part of the PriceCheck’s user base in South Africa use BlackBerry. This is also reflected in the overwhelming number of PriceCheck mobile application downloads for BlackBerry, versus other platforms. In this light we see our mobile application efforts for BlackBerry as pivotal in maintaining and growing our user base, and maximising use of the unique features that BlackBerry devices offer in current and future releases of our application, to the ultimate benefit of the South African consumer.”
Q. BlackBerry 10 is now only a couple of month old, how is that working out for PriceCheck and what was the development journey like?
A. Since 1 Feb 2013, the PriceCheck has been downloaded 1216 by BlackBerry 10 users. Charl stated that the development journey “was fairly hard in terms of available time. Our final weeks of development coincided with the summer holiday period in the southern hemisphere, which was tough. Deadline for BB10 worldwide release was quite short (31 January). There were also some app features which were tough to port to BB10 but we got it running in the end.”
Charl advises that developers spend some time and read up on the sophisticated abilities of BB10 and its new and updated technologies “like for example the Cascades SDK. There are tons of features that can be really useful to any app, you know about it by reading and getting involved in the online BB forums and communities.”
Q. What is next on the cards ? will there be a Tablet version ?
A. PriceCheck will soon be available on all tablets and this includes the BlackBerry Playbook.
So in summary:
“PriceCheck app processes a barcode scan every 10-20 seconds and has access to 30 million products, 350 online shops, over 300000 unique visitors from our app for March 2013” stats Charl.
Unlike some other big brands that have launched their app in South Africa only on Android or iOS, Pricecheck has very cleverly understood the market and released their apps on all major platforms specifically focusing on BlackBerry. It was one of the first SA apps to be featured on BlackBerry 10 which cemented their reputation as being on the cutting edge.
Clearly PriceCheck is doing it right. It gives consumers access to information no matter where they are, no matter which device they have, so that they can make an informed buying decision. It is an app that is linked to a real business that solves a real need.
