When it comes to rumours, there are plenty that go on just before a big launch as each website speculating on what it could or could not be. At Mobile World Congress we are expecting to see the Samsung Galaxy S5 but I wonder if we will see another innovation that Samsung is allegedly working on: The Galaxy Glass.
There has been some rumbling about Samsung playing in the wearable glasses category but these have been largely muted until Samsung filed for a design patent in October 2013 for a “sports glasses”.
An anonymous Samsung employee has confirmed to The Korea Times that Samsung’s glass development is well underway and will be ready for the market soon.
Galaxy Glass is expected to synch to your mobile phone and is said to have the same functionality that Google Glass boasts. Functionality such as being able to see info and alerts on the small transparent screen that sits by wearer’s peripheral vision. Galaxy Glass should also be able to extend the phone’s functionality to be more voice-driven and the user will be able to command the phone to play to music, make and receive calls, snap pics and access the web and social media. Many of these functions exist today in the Galaxy Gear smartwatch.
According to the employee:
The new smart glass to be introduced by Samsung is a new concept of wearable device that can lead to an exciting culture of communication…The smart glass will present our aim to lead the new market with proven capability. Wearable devices can’t generate profits immediately. Steady releases of devices are showing our firm commitment as a leader in new markets.
When will Samsung unveil the Galaxy Glass ?
After Mobile World Congress, there two big Consumer tradeshows which could be a possibility for the Galaxy Glass reveal. CeBIT happens in March, however that is unlikely as it is not the best platform and way too close to Mobile World Congress which will take away from the Galaxy S5.
A better fit might be the IFA Consumer Electronic Show in Berlin (5-10 Sept 2014) which is towards the end of the year and inline with the anonymous tipster.
Of course there is nothing stopping Samsung from having their own Unpacked event anytime.
How realistic is Galaxy Glass ?
Samsung doesn’t comment on rumours so no official confirmation has been received. However, Samsung Vice Chairman and CEO Kwon Oh-hyun has been vocal in expressing that Samsung is continually looking at wearable technologies such as the new Galaxy Gear and eyewear too.
In order for Samsung to compete it needs to be on the cutting and even on the even the bleeding edge of technology. There can’t be just one Glass company – the market is way too big and lucrative of other players to ignore it. Just like wearable armband tech took off for Fitbit and Nike Fuel, Samsung would not want to play catch up in the eyewear category. Rather Samsung would want to dominate it.
The consumer always wins when there is competition as each company tried to outdo each bringing better functions at cheaper prices.
Lets keep our eye on this and see what happens later in the year.
