Is MTN working towards a collaborative African Social Media ?

AfricaCom is the event where the technology geeks descend on Cape Town for several days where they have the opportunity to discuss all aspects of the telecoms industry.

Amongst the thousands of technology geeks who attended AfricaCom, I found MTN’s CEO Mr. Ahmad Farroukh. I wanted to find out about MTN data plans and the OTT services. Mr Farroukh not only spoke candidly about MTN’s plans but also unpacked his vision for a collaborative system throughout Africa which includes developing an African social media.

An African social media would be a solution “for Africa developed by Africans” which would be open to not only the four major telecos in Africa but to other companies too. However, unlike the social media in China where foreign social medias such as Facebook are blocked “We are not saying we should have our own thing but have a compatible thing with an open access”.
