How to watch and create a 360-degree YouTube vide clip

One of the latest buzzwords in tech is Virtual Reality so it was not surprising that back in March, YouTube announced that it will support a new video format; the 360-degree video.

In this video, you can use your mouse to “look around” the video – pan left, right, up and down as the action happens around you. Of course if you have a Virtual Reality headset such as Google Cardboard, you will be able to literally look around !

How to watch YouTube 360 degree video ?

If you are watching on your desktop you will need to have the latest version of Chrome web browser. Mobile users will need to update their YouTube app which is available both on Android and iOS. Viewing a 360-degree movie on your mobile allows you to tilt your phone to pan around the clip as obviously there is no mouse to use.

Once you have the latest update – check out this video:

This is one of the ads that have taken the 360-degree video and incorporated that into the clip. The branding is there if you look down but the experience will leave this clip memorable. It wont be long before other brands start using this technique and so being first is important to make that high-recall-impact.

How to create a YouTube 360-degree video ?

You can either use software from Kolor to stitch together several video clips into the 360-degree video or use one of these cameras that is YouTube compatible:

The video needs to be shot at 24, 25 or 30  frames per second.

Once you have the video file, you will need to get really technical:

Create a 360-enabled file with an app

  1. Download the 360 Video Metadata app for Mac or Windows
  2. Un-zip the file, then open the 360 Video Metadata app. If you’re on a Mac, you may need to right-click the app and then click “Open”
  3. Select the video file
  4. Click “Inject and save”
  5. Enter a name for the file that will be created
  6. Save the file. A new file will be created automatically in the same location as the original file
  7. Upload the new file to YouTube
  8. Wait for the 360 degree effect to process. This may take up to an hour.

or get really technical with a Python script:

In other words – get a pro to help you produce such a video.
