Windows 10 Questions answered !

The day has finally arrived when Microsoft is making Windows 10 available to the general public.  Over the past months we have been getting ready by reserving our Windows 10 upgrade but what happens next seems to be rather vague.

Some of my questions (and the questions that my Twitter followers sent) include:

  • What would happen on the 29th ?
  • How much hard drive space do I need ?
  • will is delete my computer ?
  • Do I need to back up beforehand ?
  • Will my applications move across to Windows 10 ?
  • If I just bought a computer with Windows 8 what happens ?
  • I have multiple computers do I need to download Windows 10 multiple times ?
  • Is Windows 10 a download file or an update ?

I wanted to get some clarity on what would happen on the 29th of July so I went to see Microsoft South Africa and posed these questions to Ashleigh Fenwick.

Here are the Windows 10 answers you were waiting for:

How to get Windows 10 without waiting ?

First thing first – have you backed up your computer ? Here are 3 software tools you should look at before you even proceed to the next step.

You will need a USB memory stick so that the installation files can be downloaded there. So make sure you have a clean one at hand before you begin.

Head over to : http://www.microsoft.com/en-US/software-download/windows10. and download either the 32-bit or 64-bit version of the installation file. Make sure you get the right version or else it will not work ! To find out which you have, go to Start, type Control panel, select System and security, and then, under System, look at the value for System type.

Once you run the installation file, you will be asked to select an edition of Windows 10. Here is how you decide which edition of Windows 10 suits you:

which edition of Windows 10 should I install ?

NOTE: if you downloaded the installation files to the USB or a DVD and you reboot your computer with the USB or DVD still in the computer, your computer might try to launch the installation file. This is a CLEAN INSTALL which means it WILL format your computer and delete everything on it if you choose to format any partition.
