It seems that even when you go underground you will not be able to escape the cell phone ring. The Gautrain has announced that together with the various cell phone networks, they will provide full cell phone signal to commuters when they are on the platform underground or whilst travelling on the Gautrain.
The Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Ismail Vadi, has announced that “full mobile communications services should be made available to Gautrain commuters by July 2014.”
This increase in coverage will be done over time and in three phases:
- Phase one: ensure that voice communications services are provided at all underground – June 2013.
- Phase two: cell phone coverage in the 15 km tunnel section of the Gautrain s – December 2013.
- Phase three: connectivity throughout the 80 km rail system of Gautrain – July 2014.
So besides being able to download the latest Angry Bird level, having signal enables commuters to make alternative arrangements in the event where there is a delay or an interruption with the Gautrain service.
In my opinion this is a great forward thinking initiative. We don’t know what the next year will bring in Tech but one thing we do know is that you need to be connected to access it.
