I have heard this often enough to get sick of hearing it. you know the whine: “We don’t have the Silicon Valley feel in South Africa” or “If only we had that Dot Com vibe we can come up with cool stuff” or “The start-up feel just isn’t here” etc. etc.
According to some Secret book, if you put it out there into the universe, it will come to be – well I guess someone was listening…
Ever heard of Garage48 ?
Garage48 is an event for brave and active startup minded people who want to develop their idea into a working prototype in the course of one weekend.
ehh… yip you read it right – ONE WEEKEND !
The concept is that just like in the “Silicon Valley” thinking – if you want to start a new HOT Tech business, you and your mates get together in your garage where you Eat (Pizza), Drink (Beer) and Sleep your business. Until it goes live and you make a fortune.
“skipping the paperwork and we’re going back to the roots of tech projects for building the prototypes in good old “garage”.
within 48 hours, a crazy weekend for sure, you come out with a demo/ prototype of your product or services.
The great thing is that it isnt aimed just at front-end developers, back-end developers, mobile developers & designers. However it is also aimed at the non-techy people like marketers, entrepreneurs, project managers, and other people interested in building a cool project within 48 hours
So how does it work ?
Garage48 events usually start a Friday evening. All participants gather together in a big room and pitch about 30 to 40 ideas on stage. Each idea is put on the wall and everyone can choose their favourite idea and team. Usually about 12-15 ideas will be selected and teams start working.
You are provided with mentors, food and drinks over the weekend, while teams are working on their projects. Sunday night 6pm is the deadline to step on the stage again and live-demo your project. We have the jury and audience to vote for their favourites and choose the winners.
Goals of Garage48:
- Organize practical, international and fun start-up events with a really lean budget
- Show that teams can turn an idea into a working service or prototype within just one weekend
- Prove that new web and mobile projects can be started with a good team and really lean budget
- Promote entrepreneurship and startup culture in Estonia, Northern Europe and Africa
- Teach people to work under a tough deadline – you need to focus on the core items of the project
- Get to know new people from other industries, roles and countries
- Less talk, more action and fun!
