Apps, Twitter, Coffee, Flying thing, Tequilla – What an awesome conference

Its all over. Apps World came and went at a blink of an eye.

Even at 8:00am, the CTICC where the convention was help, already had a vibe. In a scene reminiscent of Capuletvs. the Montague from Romeo and Juliet, the Apps Developers & the Social Media crew are in town. Amazing to see how  the “Angry Nirds” Techies who rarely get to go out were…eh…socialising with the “like-shoo-marketing-is-shweet” Social Media people Smile

The conference was divided into three section: Apps World on the one site, Social Media Forum on the other side and the middle section for Free Workshops.

Each of these sections, had a full program scheduled with varied topics and at times all three section had such awesome topics that it was tough to make a choice as you didn’t want to miss out…

Luckily the organisers (6 degrees) had arranged a Twitter Wall that was live during the entire conference. You could see the Tweets from the event displayed live on the HUGE screen which allowed you to follow what’s going on in other session you didn’t attend. The Twitter wall was used to keep everyone updated with various comments, chirps, interesting facts “live” from the various speakers and to arrange coffee meeting (vey important).

This is a Must-have facility that should be incorporated into every event !

The event sponsors had set up their stands where they had their greatest and best on show and were there to show what their company has to offer.  I spoke to some amazing companies and the talent that South Africa has is inspiring ! Why company in South Africa still buy software and development from the US or the UK is a mystery. We have the talent right here. Use it !

Before I knew it, my 2pm session arrived. Along with the rest of the panel  we took our seats and Andrew McHenry started the Location Based Services session to a packed room <gulp!>.

We all had our chance to introduce ourselves and then delve into the various Location Based Apps and services. I obviously spoke about SwiftGO.co.za and the case study we did with HiFi Corporation. The results of which were even used in another session Raymond Buckle (co chairman of Mobile Marketing Association). After fielding questions, a good sign that people were paying attention, the session was over. Amazing thanks to the Panel (Etienne Louw, CEO MapIT; Alan Lipschits, Webmail; Anwar Ahmed, Navteq; Andrew McHenry, ex Garmin Consultant)

I enjoyed the Nokia section with a very clever setup. They didn’t have a “stand” but rather created a lounge that allowed people to get together and chat and importantly get the much needed caffeine boost. This was inline with their “Connecting People” strategy which worked perfectly. Nice one !

I can say this without fear of contradiction, within the Nokia Lounge the two most important ladies at the entire show were the “coffee girls” who made free Nespresso coffee for the entire two day conference. We all know how Techies need their caffeine ! Bet you didn’t know that Nokia has a Coffee Department ? So a big thank you ladies  – without you there would have been very sleepy people !  side note: “Hey Nespresso – make sure you send these ladies a cheque !!!”

The press were also in attendance: We had an online Radio (Taxi Radio) do live broadcast from the event as well as various other  Media.

…and what’s a Techie conference without at least one flying toy ?

So in all – an awesome two days. Met lots of people, exchanged lots of information and business cards and met some nutty, amazing, interesting and insane people !

So in Summary:
I coined the term Social Mobility – which is the convergence of Social Media and Mobile Apps. I am more convinced now than ever that it is absolutely the way the world is
going. In fact, its the way the world is now !

We are mobile. We are connected. We want our information with us. Whether its Medical information available at our finger tips (Yaron from DSG) or latest soccer scores (news24.com) or getting out of traffic (swiftgo.co.za) or what time the train will arrive (Gautrain) – we want it.

We live in a time where instant gratification is key and we want it now !  Even the Montague and the Capulet agreed over “jam jars” and “long island ice tea” and Tequila shots and… and… and..
