what does the Apple ios4.3 update for the iPad do ? – a.k.a “how I wasted many hours for nothing”

After my nightmare experience of getting ios4.3 onto my iPad (see previous post), I expected that the new version will just as amazing as the previous update that allowed us to Multi-task and even have Folders – incredible what technology can do these days (not sarcastic at all…..Winking smile)

So now its 22 March and I am yet to understand what on earth happened during the ios4.3 upgrade…

Its so obscure that I had to go back to Apple’s website just to see what they improved on and why I lost all those hours of my life. Surely there must be some fantastic improvements worthy of a 611megabyte download ?

So here is what I discovered (images below are from the Apple website):

image

“the wireless technology that lets you stream content from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your HDTV via Apple TV.1 In addition to music, movies, and photos, AirPlay now streams video from your Photos app”

My Verdict: Like 99.99999% of South Africans we don’t have Apple TV so I cant comment on this feature.

image

“love the responsiveness of the new Nitro JavaScript engine powering Safari. It runs JavaScript up to twice as fast as in iOS 4.2”

My Verdict: Since I no longer have ios4.2 I cant compare “twice as fast”. On a normal usage, I have not noticed any difference what so ever. (ps. lots of complaints out there that it is actually slower !)

“Now you can play your entire iTunes library from anywhere in the house”

My Verdict: Works nicely – I can listen to “Hanna Montana” over more devices now – whooohooo. Ok, but it does work

image

“Customize the switch on the side of your iPad to lock the screen rotation or mute the volume”

My Verdict: Now THIS is THE best feature of the update – the Lock Screen switch on the side of the iPad now goes back to locking the screen. It no longer mutes your sound. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G

image

“enable Personal Hotspot and share your cellular data connection with your Mac, PC, iPad, or other Wi-Fi-capable device”

My Verdict: This is the only feature I was keen to play with – however this doesn’t work on the iPad only on the iPhone. Can you say “WTF ?” my iPad has a micro-SIM. Why cant it be the hotspot ?

Can you say “WTF ?” again ?

So to summarise:

The upgrade to ios4.3 in total meant that I can stream my music (cool) and that I can now lock my screen (cool).

Was it worth the 611 mb download ?

I submit that it was NOT.
