Just when you thought that economy flights could not get any more uncomfortable, you are wrong. Airbus has filed a patent of what can only be described as a mixture between a horse saddle and a bicycle seat which could be used to replaced the current economy seats.
The saddle seat will be used only on short flight to maximize the amount of people that could be squeezed into the plane. The seats also fold away when not in use to allow for more room. Airbus spokespeople were quick to add that it is only a patent to protect this concept so that if it does become practical no one else will do the same. At this stage is it not likely to become commercial.
My favourite is the line in the patent that reads: “and it is difficult to continue to further reduce this distance between the seats because of the increase in the average size of the passengers.”
You never hear the plus side to obesity but here is one: the distance between airline seats cant be reduced anymore !
