In 2016 we saw those around us staring deeply into their phone shouting stuff like “there is RED GYM here” and “I am going to catch a Pinsir”. This was the world of Pokémon Go, a location-based augmented reality game which uses the mobile’s GPS to locate, capture, battle, and train virtual creatures, called Pokémon. The game was downloaded over 500 million times around the world making it one of the most popular (and profitable) games.
At the height of the Pokémon Go craze, Decluttr.com published a graphic showing which state was searching for which Pokémon. In 2017 for its one year anniversary, an update to the game was released so are players still hunting for the same virtual creatures?
To do this, they paired phrases such as ‘where is…’ and ‘how to find…’ with all the Pokémon in the game and then measured search volume in each state.
It seems like Florida is trying to get ahead of the game but searching for Mewtwo which is a legendary Pokemon but has not been released yet. Rumour has it, that these types of Pokemon will be available via the Gym Raid feature…
