There is no better way to show South Africa then through photographs. Not just professional photographs but those snapped by ordinary people exploring their own cities from their perspective. This is exactly the kind of initiative that the Instagram community loves where @southafrica leads the pack. This Instagram account was created by Craig Rodney who is also the managing director at Cerebra, as a way for South Africans to show incredible pics that they snapped of their South Africa. The accounts has 1143 pics of various elements, scenes, moods and locations right across the country with over 75 400 followers admiring such images.

Not satisfied with “just” these activities,@southafrica Instagram account and South African Tourism is organising the first South African national Instagram instameet. This will be taking place from 24 – 27 September in the town of Graaff Reinet with the aim of promoting South African photographic storytelling.

Those who are keen to attend can register on the site www.instameet.co.za which already lists hundreds of people who are going to be there travelling from across the country to share their photographic stories and of course meet fellow like-minded Instagrammers.

“There are about one million active Instagram users in South Africa, and the majority of them love telling amazing South African stories.” says Craig Rodney  “This event gives people a great reason to explore our country and tell stories they wouldn’t normally get to tell. I’ve always wanted to put on an @southafrica national instameet and now it’s a reality. I’m incredibly proud and grateful to South African Tourism’s #meetsouthafrica team for helping me make this happen.”

“We chose Graaff Reinet because it’s very central, and everyone will have to do a bit of traveling and exploring in order to get there. South African Instagrammers also don’t often get the chance to explore smaller towns, and Graaff Reinet is very much worth exploring.”

And exploring is what Instagram is all about. Discovering the “new” even in your own back yard through the eye of the camera on your mobile phone and posting it for everyone to admire and share.

If you are unable to attend the event, you can follow the official hashtag being #meetsouthafrica.
