When it comes to having a connection to the Internet or even your company or home network most of us reply on WiFi.
The current WiFi solution that we have work on a “best endeavours” basis. It should connect but sometime doesn’t. We should have great signal and speed – but sometime we don’t, someone switches on the Microwave to warm up soup and we get disconnected. So basically it is unreliable, inconsistent, flaky and worst of all we just accept it.
Why is that ? I set to find out and I tracked down the company who can unlock this mystery. I chatted to Steven Galpa and Michael Fletcher from Ruckus Wireless to see why the current WiFi suck and what they are doing about it.
The root of the problem of the current WiFi systems that are out there is that they are not built to handle changing environment. They simply “broadcast” and answer any device that shout out “I am here can I connect”. What this means is that the signal strength drops as the system needs to check each and every frequency as it cant handle interference. When there are interruptions the only solution is to change the aerial with a new one. When that doesn’t work, you are told to replace that aerial with yet another one. Rinse and Repeat.
Even at AfricaCom there was a WiFi network that you could connect to but as there were so many other Access Point and networks there was so much interference that it made a connection impossible.
Ruckus Wireless has built a different WiFi product – a Smart WiFi.
What makes it smart ? Well firstly it takes care of the interference. The system learns constantly about the environment that is out there and adapts to changing conditions – all automatically to avoid interference. It has 4000 built in antenna patterns and it able to auto tune to make the best connection for you. It focuses the signal only where it is needed. It is able to extend the coverage up to to 4times the current distance.
The Smart WiFi also saves money and time as it takes care of all the nightmares that Techies have when setting up the network. This is really a plug and play solution for IT administrators who can finally offer a proper WiFi solution.
The future is even better. With 80211.U coming into play, the various WiFi devices, including mobile phones and tablets, will have built in ability to swap messages between the device and the WiFi hotspot. This message is a list of pre-configured and authorised networks and settings which will enable us to walk into a hotspot and our devices will just log onto the network using our existing pre-set preferences. Think of it like mobile roaming – the phone automatically select the cell phone network that you can connect to. If you have an account with a service provider, you wont have to log in to another service provider hotspot. It will just do the hard work for you.
Ruckus Wireless has many wireless solutions and believes that there are indoor solutions and outdoor solutions. Ruckus is working closely with the network operators with systems that allow the cell phone carriers to off lay data off the cell network and onto WiFi networks as quickly as possible. This means increase speed and better experience fro the subscribers.
I cant wait to test out this kit and will report back on just revolutionary this thinking is – watch this space for more on Ruckus Wireless.
