Introducing the new Nano Sim

Nano Sim

We had the SIM card, then the Micro-SIM and now there is a new SIM card – the Nano SIM. The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) announced a new standardized SIM format for mobile devices.

The new Nano-SIM cards will be 40% smaller than the current smallest SIM card design, and will measure 12.3 millimetres wide by 8.8 millimetres high and 0.67 millimetres thick.

As was expected not all companies agree on the design of the Nano SIM with Motorola, Nokia and RIM submitted their own proposal however ultimately Apple’s design was chosen.  There is the usual rumours of patents infringements, unfair play,  licencing requirements etc. etc. – something that we have come used to with every development in the industry.

In my opinion, I really wish that the hardware manufacturers stop trying to save 1mm but rather work on getting us a better battery that last longer !
